Pinterest Users Can Make Money with New Affiliate Tools

Pinterest is launching a program that will allow users to make money through affiliate links.

The image-sharing platform is the latest social media website to join many others that make it easy for content creators to earn commission – Instagram and Twitter have both launched several creator-friendly initiatives over the last year.

In an announcement from Pinterest, the company said that it wants to help creators “build and grow their audience in a positive environment,” referring to itself as “the platform where people come to get inspired.”

One of the most important updates for Pinterest creators is that Idea Pins are now ‘shoppable.’

On Pinterest, ‘pins’ are essentially bookmarks, which make up the main function of the platform. There are many different types of pins.

Idea Pins were launched this spring for Pinterest users with a business account in select countries. They’re essentially multi-page video stories, which allow creators to show off products or other innovations.

Now, Idea Pins can be formatted for shopping. When users buy a product after clicking a link found in an idea pin, the user who posted the idea pin will earn a commission.

Data from the company suggested that idea pins are already showing good signs for web retailers. According to Pinterest, users are 89 percent more likely to “exhibit shopping intent” on products tagged with idea pins than those without – and engagement with idea pins is typically nine times higher than engagement with standard pins.

The company has also brought forth an update to brand partnerships. Now, users with branded content will be able to confirm their partnerships by adding information directly to their idea pins. When the brand confirms the tag, the idea pin will receive a paid partnership label.

This feature will first come to business accounts in the U.S. and U.K. before being rolled out to more countries later this year.
