New Google Algorithm Update Confirmed, Google’s Advice Remains the Same: Make Good Sites

On June 2, 2019, Google’s Search Liaison Danny Sullivan announced a broad core algorithm update would start rolling out today, June 3, 2019: https://twitter.com/searchliaison/status/1135275028834947073 Officially, the update is called the “June 2019 Core Update,” which seems to be Google getting ahead of the SEO community’s tendency to give esoteric names to these updates. As with every Google algorithm update, the search giant’s advice remains the same: “there is nothing in particular to ‘fix,’ and we don’t want content owners to mistakenly try to change things that aren’t issues.” Google, as we’ve reported on in the past, makes numerous changes to their search algorithm daily. Most of these updates have little noticeable change or impact on a majority of sites, so they don’t bother to comment or discuss them. Broad core algorithm updates are much larger in scope and focus on search in general, hence the use of “broad core” in the name. So what does this all mean?

How To Deal With Google Algorithm Updates

In short, expect to see some changes to how Google Search indexes and ranks pages in the coming days and weeks—but don’t panic.  Broad core algorithm updates are not “targeting” a specific niche or practice—again, they’re not trying to “fix” anything—but are rather focusing on improving search as a whole. So with that in mind, how can you best handle an update like this? Start with data. Observe, collect information, and monitor how the update impacts your sites.

Don’t panic!
If you see upswings in traffic and rankings, great! If you see a loss in both, don’t worry! Both are totally normal, and you won’t know where things truly lie until a few weeks after the update rolls out. Collect as much data as you can and use that as your starting point. In terms of “fixes” or improvements, remember that there’s nothing inherently “broken” with your sites and pages. Follow Google’s advice on this one, too: https://twitter.com/searchliaison/status/1050447187476271104 Make the best content you can. At the end of the day, Google’s trying to deliver high-quality, useful, and relevant content to users. Create the best possible sites and pages you can to get to the top of search rankings. It remains to be seen how this algorithm update will affect the search engine as a whole, but for now, we recommend closely monitoring your sites and data. Stay tuned for a detailed breakdown of the June 2019 Core Update!
