Google Updates Metrics FAQs For Upcoming SEO Update The 'Google Page Experience Update' Will Launch in May

Google has provided new information about the metrics that will affect rankings in an upcoming SEO update. 

The information was made available through an update to the FAQ page that Google has dedicated to the new metrics.

These metrics are what Google calls ‘Core Web Vitals,’ and they will begin to affect search rankings this spring, when Google launches the ‘Google Page Experience Update.’

Specifically, Core Web Vitals include three metrics:

  • Largest Contentful Paint, or how quickly content loads

  • First Input Delay, or how quickly a page can become interactive

  • Cumulative Layout Shift, or how little unexpected movement of visual elements there is

Information about Core Web Vitals was made available in late 2020, but a recent update to the metrics’ FAQ page has added some clarity. SEO blogger Barry Schwartz compared the old and new FAQ pages and noted a few key changes.

First, Google explained that it would still prioritize relevance over Core Web Vitals – in other words, relevant content could still rank high even without meeting the needs of the new metrics.

Additionally, the new FAQ explains that content can still appear in the ‘Top Stories’ carousel, even if it doesn’t meet the criteria of Core Web Vitals. The carousel is a vertical array of news stories that is generated by an algorithm for searches that usually involve breaking news.

This new info suggests that Core Web Vitals are not as powerful ranking criteria as some may have speculated – and that the Google Page Experience Update might not harshly affect site rankings after all.

Still, sites should take caution in anticipation of the update. It is scheduled to launch in May.

LAUNCHED: Google’s Page Experience Update begins rollout

SEOs have been patiently waiting for Google’s Page Experience Update since it was announced last November – and finally, it’s here.

More specifically, Google announced that it has begun a two-and-a-half-month rollout for the update, hoping to have it completed in August.

Notably, the update will see the implementation of ‘Core Web Vitals’ in search rankings. These are metrics that sites can improve to make their sites more accessible and functional for users. Specifically, the Core Web Vitals are:

  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), or how quickly content loads

  • First Input Delay (FID), or how quickly a page can become interactive

  • Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS), or how little unexpected movement of visual elements there is

In other words, in order to perform well, websites should load quickly, become interactive quickly, and have few elements that move unexpectedly.

Additionally, the update will see the removal of the ‘AMP badge.’ AMP is an HTML framework that developers often use to improve the speed of their sites. Moving forward, AMP will not be required to use the Google News app or Google’s News website.

Google is also updating its ‘Top Stories’ carousel feature. It will include all news content as long as the content meets Google’s guidelines for news.

Experts suggest that this update won’t lead to any drastic results – at least not right away.

Google Webmaster Trends Analyst John Mueller told one user that the slow nature of the rollout should prevent any quick drops:

Prominent SEO writer Barry Schwartz wrote that the launch hasn’t brought forth any major shift in SERP results so far:

“So far we don’t see much in terms of ranking changes from this page experience update,” he wrote. “I checked the forum and community chatter as well as the tracking tools. All are quiet on the ranking fluctuation part.”

We can expect more developments to arise over the next two months.

Google Page Experience Update Pushed Back To June

A major algorithm update previously scheduled to launch in May has now been pushed back to June of this year.

The Page Experience algorithm update, which was announced in November 2020, will see the Core Web Vitals become ranking signals when it is eventually rolled out.

The update will also see changes made to Google News related to Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP). Specifically, Google will expand the use of non-AMP content across news.google.com, along with its mobile apps. Google is also expected to remove AMP badges that indicate AMP content.

In a blog post, Google confirmed that the Page Experience algorithm update will begin rolling out around mid-June 2021, but would not start affecting rankings until the end of August.

The reason Google is rolling out the update gradually is so that it can monitor the impact the update may have along with any unexpected issues that may arise.

“We’ll begin using page experience as part of our ranking systems beginning in mid-June 2021. However, page experience won’t play its full role as part of those systems until the end of August. You can think of it as if you’re adding a flavoring to a food you’re preparing. Rather than add the flavor all at once into the mix, we’ll be slowly adding it all over this time period.”

The delay is good news for marketers and site owners, as it gives them an extra month to prepare for the shakeup.

Fortunately though, most websites will not experience any drastic changes when this update rolls out, according to Google.

The reason for this is that page experience will only be one of many factors Google takes into consideration when ranking websites.
