The Future of Twitter’s Monetization

Just last week Elon Musk gained ownership over Twitter and he’s already made some pretty drastic changes.

Starting by firing some of the top leaders in the company including the CEO. Another plan that was outlined was the idea of charging verified users a fee. The notion behind this is that it will eliminate bots and make sure that verified users are indeed people. However, there are now rumours and speculation around what might come next.

 Revisiting the Idea of Paying for Long-Form Video

Remember last summer when Twitter was contemplating the monetization of adult content on Twitter. Well this idea is back in the cards, sort of. Musk has circulated the idea of allowing Twitter creators the ability to charge a fee for users to view their long form content, according to Washington Post. This feature would include a nuanced paywall where creators could set their fee for viewing.

The article from the Washington Post reported that once creators have their content ready for posting they “can then choose from a preset list of prices, such as $1, $2, $5 or $20.”

Although this sounds like a good step for creators, many brands are wary given the history with Twitter on this idea.

Social Media Today reports that brands and agencies will likely see this to be problematic and will need a revised set of policies before moving forward with this.

Un-Banning Users

This change is one that many are already aware of, especially since Elon Musk has been vocal about bringing a certain former U.S. President back on the platform. This potential change goes hand in hand with Musk’s introduction of a Content Moderation Council.

This assembly is supposed to make decisions on content and re-reinstatement of banned accounts.

You Might Have To Pay For Sending DMs

Musk invested approximately $44 billion dollars in becoming the owner of Twitter and this is supposedly another way he will be making that back. This mainly has to do with paid ads in DMs but Musk isn’t the only one exploring this idea.

As many social media platforms like to mimic each others features, Meta is exploring a similar feature, Social Media Today reports.

Policy Comes First

As always, if there’s not proper policy in place for these new features that Musk wants to add, he can expect brands and agencies to drop pretty quickly. All these feature will contribute to the end of goal for Twitter which is to integrate more methods for monetization.
