It's about understanding the algorithms and various other elements discussed below, (on-page, off-page, technical, content, link building and more), yet never forgetting that at the other end, there's a human seeking valuable information.


The most successful SEO strategies seamlessly meld technical acumen with a keen understanding of human behaviour, ensuring not just better rankings, but meaningful connections with potential visitors.


As someone who's steered businesses through the digital maze for over two decades now, I recognize that your primary concern, be it as a business owner or a team member, is how to adeptly harness the power of SEO.


It's about transforming SEO into a tool that consistently draws pertinent traffic, educates, cultivates leads, boosts sales, and, in the endgame, improves both revenue and profit for your business.

In a digital landscape that's seen countless shifts over the past quarter-century, I've had a front-row seat to the transformative journey of SEO.


While you might stumble upon a rudimentary definition of SEO online, such as it being "the methodology to enhance a website or web page's natural visibility in search engines," this barely scratches the surface of the intricate tapestry SEO weaves in 2023.


Search engine optimization (SEO) is a crucial aspect of modern digital marketing strategies for any business, no doubt,


SEO involves optimizing your website to rank higher in search engine results pages (SERPs), driving more organic traffic to your website.


For the business-minded, the essence of SEO isn't just about rankings or clicks. It's about harnessing its potential to drive targeted traffic, nurture leads, accelerate sales, and ultimately, propel your business's revenue and profit trajectory.

SEO is a multifaceted discipline, but it can be distilled into three primary components.


Those three main components of SEO are:

  • On-Page SEO: This involves optimizing individual web pages to rank higher and earn more relevant traffic. This includes optimizing content for specific keywords, improving meta tags (like meta descriptions and title tags), ensuring mobile-friendliness, and improving page load speeds.

Though the intersecting circles present an appealing visual, they're designed this way to emphasize the interconnected nature of these efforts.


For instance, securing backlinks (off-page) is challenging if your content doesn't meet quality standards (on-page). Similarly, image compression (on-page) directly contributes to enhancing page speed (technical).


It's worth noting (if you don't already know) that the world of SEO is ever-evolving. Which can make it very challenging. As search engine algorithms become more sophisticated and the ways people search change over time, best practices in SEO continue to transform and evolve.


At its heart, however, SEO remains about ensuring that websites deliver relevant, high-quality content in a way that's accessible and valuable to both search engines and users.

The initial phase of search engine optimization involves pinpointing what you aim to optimize. Essentially, it's about recognizing the terms or "keywords" that individuals use in search engines like Google, and ensuring your website ranks for those specific terms.


Seems straightforward, doesn't it?


On the downside, it's just not that straightforward. When pinpointing the keywords to target on your website, there are several pivotal considerations to bear in mind:


Here are three key factors to consider during keyword research to select the keywords that best align with your business:

  1. Relevance: The selected keywords should closely align with the core offerings of your business. They should represent the products, services, or information that your target audience is actively seeking. Irrelevant keywords may drive traffic, but they won't result in conversions or meaningful engagement.

  2. Search Volume: It's essential to target keywords that have a significant number of monthly searches, indicating that there's a demand for the related content or offering. However, striking a balance is crucial; extremely high search volumes might also mean high competition.

  3. Competition: Assess the competitiveness of a keyword. Highly competitive keywords can be challenging to rank for, especially for newer businesses or websites. Sometimes, it's more strategic to target long-tail keywords (longer, more specific keyword phrases) that might have lower search volumes but also less competition, leading to a higher chance of ranking well and attracting a more niche audience.


Begin by discerning who your potential clients are and their probable search behaviors


If you haven't pinpointed your audience yet, this is a very important step. Diving into this understanding is foundational, both for your overarching business goals and your SEO efforts. You need a plan!


Traditional Search Intent Breakdown:

In the realm of traditional search marketing, keywords are generally categorized as:

  • Informational

  • Transactional

  • Commercial

  • Navigational

  • Brands

Transactional and commercial intents often overlap, reflecting similar user intentions.

Google's own classification, as per its quality rater guidelines, is:

  • Do = Transactional

  • Know = Informational

  • Go = Navigational

By 2015, Google expanded the 'Know' category, introducing "Know Simple." For straightforward search queries, Google often showcases a "OneBox" to provide an immediate answer within the search results (such as the one below). ** These "OneBox" or better known as "Position Zero" in SERP's can be very valuable to capture organic traffic before any Paid Search/Ads show up, Local Results, or more! I can go into more detail on that later this week.


Common scenarios when a OneBox appears include queries related to:

  • Calculators

  • Weather forecasts

  • Current time

  • Translations

  • Specific characteristics of an item or entity.


While the previously mentioned search intentions provide a foundation, they lack two critical distinctions: the emphasis on current relevance and geographic specificity. Hence, it's prudent to incorporate:

  • Trend-centric keywords

  • Geographically-focused keywords


I've included some steps to helping you conduct your keyword research below - to get your foundations started!

  1. Brainstorm Keywords: Start by brainstorming a list of keywords and phrases that are relevant to your business and/or target audience.

  2. Use Keyword Research Tools: Use keyword research tools such as Google Keyword Planner, SEMrush, or Ahrefs to identify additional keywords and phrases related to your business.

  3. Analyze Competitor Keywords: Analyze the keywords and phrases that your competitors are ranking for to identify opportunities for your website.

  4. Choose Target Keywords: Choose target keywords and phrases that are relevant to your business and have a high search volume and low competition.

Here are some valuable reasons why flat-style architecture (like the example above) is more conducive to driving long-term SEO results.

This streamlined structure enhances user experience by making it easier for visitors to find what they're looking for without delving too deep.

  2. Enhanced Crawlability: Search engine bots, like Googlebot, have a smoother experience crawling and indexing sites with a flat architecture. The fewer the clicks required to reach a page, the more efficiently search engines can access, crawl, and index that page.

  3. Link Juice Distribution: In the realm of SEO, the idea of "link juice" (or the equity passed from one page or site to another) is essential. With a flat architecture, the authority derived from backlinks to your main pages is distributed more evenly across the site, potentially boosting the ranking power of individual pages.

Note: This doesn't actually impact on-page SEO like you might think but will impact CTR (click through rate) from Search Engines when your listing starts gaining top positions and click through.

  2. Keyword Rankings: Track the rankings of your target keywords in search engine results pages (SERPs). This could come from an alternative tool like SEMRush, AHrefs, Keyword Insights, or others.

  3. Sessions by Device: Keep an eye on this one! It's mobile vs desktop and how your traffic is interacting with your website and content. Make sure to build a balanced approach so you can entice all visiting traffic.

  4. New Users: Watch this one carefully also as it's a great indicator of how traffic is coming to the site which has never visited!

  5. Backlinks: Track the number and quality of backlinks to your website. Various platforms track this but we feel Ahrefs has the most accurate data. We also use Majestic for link tracking.

  6. Bounce Rate: Track the percentage of visitors who leave your website after viewing only one page. Google Analytics provides this and is a great way to see how people are interacting with your page and content. High bounce rates coupled with low CTR from Google Search Console are pages you should be focusing on!
