Moz Get’s Acquired by Email Marketing Provider iContact

It’s official – SEO tool provider Moz has been acquired by the email marketing software company iContact Marketing Corp., in a move that is sending shock waves throughout the SEO industry.

The news about this acquisition has been surprising for many, however, it’s well known that Moz had been aiming to sell the company for several years.

This is evident from the company’s ongoing public struggles over the years, starting in 2016 when Moz let go 28% of its staff. The following year in 2017, Moz co-founder Rand Fishkin announced he was transitioning from company and stepping down as CEO. He formally left the company altogether in 2018 to start Sparktoro.

The financial details of the acquisition have not been disclosed.

Here is what current Moz CEO Sarah Bird had to say about the news:

“Since the beginning, Moz has elevated SEO as a critical strategy for growth and brand recognition. With this news, our mission remains the same. Moz should only innovate faster and more effectively for our customers. The shared focus on delivering powerful digital marketing solutions is a perfect fit for our brand, staff and community. We are excited to begin collaborating on new solutions for our collective customers.”

Who is iContact?

For those who are unfamiliar, iContact is an email marketing company that is a part of a group of brands that operate as a subsidiary of J2 Global. This list includes:

Campaigner

SMTP

Kickbox

Together, they work with small and mid-sized businesses to provide advanced email marketing automation tools.

But now, iContact is looking to delve into the world of SEO, making a partnership with Moz a perfect fit.

“Our readers know how critical SEO work is when it comes to the success of marketing strategies, and as an industry leader, Moz was the natural choice for iContact’s expansion into the SEO space,” said a press release announcing the acquisition.

So, What Does This Mean for Moz Users?

The press release added that by joining the iContact family, Moz will also be better equipped to assist its subscribers with SEO and digital marketing.

Ideally, this means we will see some cool new Moz features and tools for users down the road.  It will also be interesting to see if Moz and iContact’s tools will ever integrate, as organic search and email marketing are two of the most powerful marketing strategies right now.

In the meantime, we’ll keep our eyes peeled for any exciting announcements from the newly merged companies.
