Google Introduces New Algorithm Update As Link Spam Continues to Roll Out

Google certainly doesn’t waste any time! While the Link Spam Update is still rolling out after three weeks, it appears that Google has begun rolling out yet another algorithm update this week.

According to Search Engine Round Table, the update likely began rolling out on Tuesday, but things started to spike on Wednesday, August 18th.

It’s possible that the activity is related to the Link Spam Update, however, based on past experience, it’s also likely that this is a completely separate algorithm update. After all, Google does like to keep us on our toes.

Search Engine Roundtable writer Barry Schwartz wrote that he first began to notice ranking fluctuations after other SEOs discussed it on WebmasterWorld.

Here are some of the standout comments from the thread:

“I had an enormous spike in traffic from the UK at exactly 1pm today…all coming from Google search or direct (Google images UK). All from different IP addresses and cities around the UK, and real traffic that had multiple PV. My UK traffic is up 869% so far today. Anyone else seeing this?”

“Its absolutely insane how much Google is refreshing at the moment. Either something isnt right/performing how they want it too, or they are completely revolutionising the way the algos work.”

“Phenomenal spike in traffic and CTR since the last 48 hours specially in the tech niche. But entire last week was pretty bad, in terms of traffic and everything.”

Schwartz also posted screen grabs of Google Tracking tools that show some of the volatility SEOs have been noticing.

So, what are your thoughts on this? Do you think this activity is related to the Link Spam Update or something else altogether? Google rarely offers confirmation in times like these, so it’s all a guessing game at this point.
