Effective Marketing Ideas for Small Businesses in 2023

In today's competitive business landscape, small businesses need to employ creative and effective marketing strategies to stand out and attract customers.

It's absolutely essential to stay updated with the latest trends and techniques to ensure your small business thrives.

In today's piece, one of our senior marketing strategists, Alex Greening, explores some of the most effective marketing ideas for small businesses to tackle in 2023. Let's get at them!

Table of Contents

1. Embrace Social Media

Social media platforms have become an essential marketing tool for businesses of all sizes. If you aren't looking at social media seriously today, you really should be taking a moment to see the opportunity and potential that is out there for brand building.

In 2023, we recommend small businesses focus on creating a strong presence on the popular platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, and TikTok. But when you think about the time involved for each one, you might feel overwhelmed on where to start. Don't worry!

PRO TIP: At the very lease, create a brand presence on at least 1 platform (and this should be the one your audience frequents the most). The goal here is to build a solid base and following for your product/service or brand.

That way, you can build up to a 2nd social platform that might be the next frequent area they are socially engaging in. Take it one step at a time, build a small plan about setups, audience in that social platform, and begin testing the waters with various posts, types of content, visuals, etc. See what the audience engages with that then make the jump to creating a more aligned strategy. We've outlined some of the points below to help you focus your efforts on.

Here are some tips to make the most of social media marketing:

  • Create a consistent brand identity: Ensure that your business's logo, colors, and messaging are consistent across all social media platforms. This will help build brand recognition and trust among your audience.

  • Post regularly: Maintain an active presence on social media by posting regularly and engaging with your followers. Respond to comments and messages promptly to show that you value your audience's input.

  • Use hashtags strategically: Research relevant hashtags and use them in your posts to increase visibility and reach a wider audience.

  • Run targeted ads: Utilize the advertising features on social media platforms to target specific demographics and interests, ensuring your ads reach the right audience.

2. Leverage Local SEO

Local SEO is crucial for small businesses looking to attract customers in their area.

By optimizing your website and online presence for local search, you can increase your visibility and drive more traffic to your business.

PRO TIP: If you are not a local business with your typical "brick and mortar" style shop (defined to Google as a shop customers can walk by on the street and enter physically), you can skip Local SEO as a strategy item. Don't try to create fake profiles for local businesses that don't have an actual physical address where customers can visit - in the long run, it will do more damage that good.

Here are some local SEO tips for small businesses:

  • Claim Your Google My Business Profile: Create and optimize your Google My Business listing to improve your local search ranking and provide potential customers with essential information about your business. We see this occasionally where a local business comes to us for help, a strategy to execute, and they have not even claimed or own their own business profile. Yikes! You should have those in toe right away.

  • Map The Google My Business with the right Categories: Too often, we see accounts with clients categories setup incorrectly. If you aren't targeting the right keyword by service or industry, your profile won't show up for the correct searches when they are triggered in search, making it really hard for you to compete against your competitors.

  • Optimize Website for Local Keywords: Incorporate location-specific keywords into your website's content, meta tags, and URLs to improve your local search ranking. Google needs to understand that you are a local business, and more often than not, those aspects can influence how it ranks your time in a smaller geographic area.

  • Encourage Customer Reviews: Positive reviews on platforms like Google and Yelp can significantly impact your local search ranking. Encourage satisfied customers to leave reviews and respond to them promptly.

  • Build Local Backlinks: Reach out to local businesses, organizations, and bloggers to build backlinks to your website. Use media campaigns with radio to draw attention to your business or service if you can. Link building is a VERY time consuming task! Make no mistake, but the rewards down the line are important. This will help improve your local search ranking profile (by establishing authority) while also establishing credibility within your community.

3. Create Engaging Content

Content marketing is an effective way to attract and engage your target audience, but creating an engaging content strategy in 2023 requires a comprehensive and forward-thinking approach that takes into account the evolving digital landscape and consumer behaviours. It's no easy undertaking!

By creating valuable and informative content for your audiences, you can establish your business as an industry expert in the market and build trust with potential customers. Much like we are doing right here!

Here are some steps to guide you in developing an engaging content strategy for small businesses:

  • Understand Your Audience is Key: As we've noted before, conduct thorough audience research to understand your target audience's preferences, pain points, and interests. Use analytics tools and social listening to gain insights into their behaviour and engagement patterns.

  • Start a Blog: Publish regular blog posts on topics relevant to your industry and audience. This will help drive organic traffic to your website and improve your search engine ranking.

  • Video Content: Video remains a dominant form of engagement. Create a diverse range of videos, such as product demos, tutorials, behind-the-scenes footage, live streams, and short-form social media videos.

  • Micro-Content: In today's fast-paced digital world, micro-content such as bite-sized videos, snackable social media posts, and short-form stories cater to shorter attention spans and are easily shareable.

  • Visual Content: Engaging visuals play a crucial role in content marketing. Infographics, images, illustrations, and GIFs can convey information in a visually appealing and easily digestible format.

  • Create Infographics: Infographics are a visually appealing way to present complex information. Share them on social media or embed them in your blog posts to increase engagement.

  • User-Generated Content (UGC): UGC fosters authenticity and trust. Encourage your audience to create and share content related to your brand, such as testimonials, reviews, and social media posts featuring your products or services.

  • Social Media Stories: Stories on platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat offer a more casual and ephemeral way to engage with your audience using a mix of images, videos, and stickers.

Advanced content development ideas your business can leverage down the road to increase brand strength.

  • Develop Case Studies: Showcase your business's success stories by creating case studies that highlight the benefits of your products or services.

  • Interactive eBooks and Whitepapers: Instead of traditional static PDFs, consider creating interactive eBooks and whitepapers with multimedia elements, clickable elements, and quizzes to keep readers engaged.

  • Webinars and Online Events: Host webinars and virtual events on topics of interest to your audience. These events allow for real-time interaction, Q&A sessions, and networking opportunities.

  • Host a Podcast: Launch a podcast to discuss industry trends, share expert advice, and interview influential figures in your field.

PRO TIP: Repurpose Content Across Platforms: Because you're time is so valuable, and limited, creating different types of content can be VERY time consuming, BUT if you focus on 1 platform's content for your audience as noted above, and then maximize the reach of your content by repurposing it for different platforms and formats - you can save a lot of time. It might take a few tried to get a workflow happening, but we guarantee it will save tones of time down the line. IE - example, turn a blog post into an infographic, create a blog post and pull quotes for various social platforms, or create a podcast episode and turn it into a blog post, or a video into a series of social media clips. See what's happening, get the idea. The content then begins to feed into the other types of social media networks you can leverage. Just make sure that you know where your audience hangs out!

4. Utilize Email Marketing

Email marketing remains a powerful tool for small businesses to communicate with their audience and promote their products or services.

Here are some tips for effective email marketing:

  • Build a Quality Email List: Encourage website visitors to subscribe to your mailing list by offering incentives such as discounts, exclusive content, or free resources.

  • Segment The List: Divide your email list into segments based on factors like demographics, purchase history, and engagement levels. This will allow you to send targeted and relevant content to each group.

  • Craft Compelling Subject Lines: Write attention-grabbing subject lines that encourage recipients to open your emails. Keep them short, clear, and relevant to the email content.

  • Dynamic Content: Use dynamic content blocks to customize email content based on recipient data, such as location, past purchases, or engagement history, to make emails more relevant and engaging.

  • Omni-Channel Integration: Ensure your email marketing is integrated with other marketing channels to provide a seamless customer experience. Coordinate your email campaigns with social media, website content, and other touch-points.

  • Design Mobile-Friendly Emails: Given the prevalence of mobile device usage, ensure that your emails are optimized for mobile devices with a mobile-first approach to ensure they look and function well on smaller screens, as a significant portion of your audience will likely read them on their smartphones or tablets.

  • A/B Testing: Continuously conduct A/B tests to compare different email elements, such as subject lines, CTAs, and visuals. Use the insights gained to optimize future campaigns for better performance.

  • Email Deliverability Optimization: Regularly monitor and optimize your email deliverability to maintain a healthy sender reputation and ensure your emails land in the recipient's inbox rather than the spam folder.

PRO TIP: Personalization and Segmentation: Personalize your email content based on the recipient's sign up specifications, behaviour, preferences, and demographics. Utilize segmentation to group your audience into smaller, more targeted segments for better engagement and relevancy. This will improve both open rates and conversions.

PRO STAT: Email marketing revenue is estimated to reach almost 11 billion by the end of 2023. (Statista, 2021)
